What is Internal Family Systems?
The Internal Family Systems (IFS) model is based on the understanding that each of us holds multiple sub-personalities, or “parts,” each with its own unique thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. These parts often carry beliefs, emotions, and motivations shaped by past experiences and traumas.
The aim of IFS therapy is to build a compassionate relationship with these parts, supporting them in releasing the burdens they carry.
IFS creates space for parts that are often silenced or hidden to be heard, opening the way toward self-discovery, healing, and self-compassion.
How does IFS work?
IFS therapy is founded on the understanding that every part of our inner system plays an important role in helping us cope with life’s challenges. At times, however, certain parts become burdened by extreme emotions or beliefs, which can disrupt our overall balance and well-being.
In therapy, individuals learn to recognize and understand the different parts of their internal world. By approaching these parts with curiosity and compassion, they deepen their self-awareness and begin to foster greater self-acceptance.
With the support of a therapist, clients learn to access their true Self — the calm, compassionate core that exists beyond the influence of any single part. The Self serves as a wise and nurturing guide, creating the conditions for healing and integration.
As clients cultivate a more harmonious relationship with their parts and strengthen their connection to the Self, they often experience meaningful shifts in emotional well-being, relationships, and overall quality of life.
IFS therapy provides a safe and transformative space for self-discovery, healing, and personal growth.
